Why are my pipes broken?
Not all pipes are the same – some break more easily than others. Generally, older pipes are more likely to corrode, leak, or break down. If your home is old, your pipes are likely old too, and if you're having problems, they could be the cause. For example, homes built in the 1960s and 70s often have galvanized pipes that corrode over time and cause leaks or backups. Corroded pipes can't be repaired, so replacing them is the best option. Homes built in the 80s and 90s sometimes have faulty polybutylene plastic pipes that can break suddenly with no warning. Copper pipes, which are more modern, last longer and resist corrosion better than older materials. It's probably not your fault if you have pipe problems – it's more likely that your pipes are old and can't handle their workload anymore.
What broke my pipes?
Although it can happen, pipes rarely break all at once. Instead, as outlined above, a home’s pipes slowly become more worn out and susceptible to pressure and damage over time until, finally, something strains them too far. If you’ve noticed a fracture or serious rupture in one of your pipes recently, then it was probably caused by a combination of age, rust, corrosion, or strain and:
- Defective pipe construction
- Improper maintenance or pipe leak repair work
- Ineffective corroded pipe repair
- Freezing pipes
- Polybutylene (plastic) pipe malfunctions
- Back up
- Clogs
- Hard water
- Abnormally high water pressure
- Tree roots (which will necessitate sewer pipe repair)
